The Princess of Wales has been away from the spotlight for over two months while she recovers from abdominal surgery – and is not due to return to public duties until after Easter.

The feverish speculation about the Princess of Wales could spark up again due to an ‘unfortunate’ move, according to an expert.

Kate has been away from the public spotlight for more than two months now following abdominal surgery earlier this year. When her surgery was announced back in January, Kensington Palace explained she would not return to duties until after Easter – and it added it would only issue information about her when there were “significant updates”. However, this hasn’t stopped outlandish speculation on social media about the princess by those frustrated by the lack of updates and additional information and a number of whacky theories have emerged over where she is.

Her recovery from surgery also comes at a time when King Charles has been receiving treatment for cancer – although unlike his daughter-in-law has been pictured despite also not taking part in public duties. And speaking on the Mirror’s podcast, Pod Save The King, royal editor Russell Myers said: “The King has gone a very different way to the Princess of Wales, he has been giving regular updates, we’ve seen him being driven in the State Bentley with the big windows waving to the crowds, then taking part in a video. He obviously feels well enough in himself to do those sorts of things. He is carrying on his mother’s mantra – being seen to be believed.

“But that doesn’t take away from the fact that we should respect Kate wanting to guard her privacy – it’s a private medical matter and she obviously had a lot to deal with, major surgery and taking that period of time to rest and recuperate.

“By saying that it is kind of unfortunate they’ve kind of put a date on it [her return], because by saying she’s going to be back by Easter, if she needs a couple more weeks or she’s not back, I think they’ve said after Easter. And if she’s not back soon enough after that, the rumour mill will start again and I’m sure they are quite conscious of that.”

Earlier this week, Prince William was forced to pull out of a royal event due to a “personal matter”. The Prince of Wales had been due to attend a memorial service on Tuesday for the late King Constantine of Greece, who was also his godfather, at Windsor Castle but decided not to attend.

Kensington Palace would not elaborate further but said the Princess of Wales continues to be doing well. And Russell added: “The very fact they said personal reasons, it doesn’t stop the rumour mill from exploding and we’ve seen this recently with the chatter on social media about where is Kate, what is wrong with her, we haven’t seen her in so long. That has gone into absolute overdrive. I think that Willam and Kate, we talk about them being public figures, we talk about what they are doing on certain issues.
