In-law relationships can definitely be tricky, but what happens when your in-laws are members of the British royal family? Meghan Markle has learned the answer to that question the hard way, especially because it doesn’t seem as if she and sister-in-law Kate Middleton have ever truly gotten along, even going back to when she was still planning her wedding to Prince Harry. But over the years, the details have gotten very muddied. Where do Kate and Meghan stand today?
Here’s a refresher on what you need to know about Kate and Meghan’s feud.
One of the biggest instances of drama between Meghan and Kate took place as the royals were planning Meghan and Harry’s 2018 wedding. There were wild rumors about what happened behind the scenes, but Harry told the whole story in his memoir, Spare.
According to Harry, Princess Charlotte’s flower girl dress was “baggy” on her, and although Meghan advised Kate to have it altered, Kate went on to discuss the situation with her personal dress designer and wanted to have all of the dresses remade – four days before the wedding. Apparently, this reduced Meghan to tears.
They Seemed To Be Friends – for a While
Shortly after Meghan and Harry’s wedding, it appeared she and Kate were on much better terms. They were attending royal engagements with Harry and William as a foursome, sitting next to each other at Wimbledon … everything seemed great! But under the surface, more drama was brewing.
Meghan & Harry Flee the Country
Unfortunately, the peace in the royal family didn’t last very long! In January 2020, Meghan and Harry announced that they’d be leaving the UK and their posts as senior royals for the foreseeable future – and just a couple of months later, they were sitting down with Oprah Winfrey to talk about how they really felt about the royal family.
At the time, Meghan said Kate apologized for the whole flower girl debacle. “I don’t think it’s fair to her to get into the details because she apologized, and I’ve forgiven her,” Meghan said.
Back Together Again
More than two years after Meghan and Harry made their move to the US full time, they reunited with William and Kate in London for the saddest reason: the death of Queen Elizabeth in September 2022. All seemed to be well enough between them during the times they were together for her funeral events, if a bit awkward. Behind the scenes, Kate and Meghan were “not known” to have so much as a conversation, according to what a royal source told the Daily Mirror.
With Meghan and Kate permanently living on different continents and Will and Harry’s feud ongoing, it doesn’t seem as if these sisters-in-law will have any reason to make nice in the near future.
They may never have the BFF relationship that many royal watchers hoped to see from them, but at this point, they might be better off apart, especially if their husbands aren’t getting along.
