Except for formal events of the British Royal Family , the first and only time the two couples William – Kate and Harry – Meghan appeared together was a talk on stage at the Royal Foundation Forum in February 2018.
Despite the image of unity that the “Fab Four” tried to project, viewers could sense their stiffness and awkwardness, which provided a clear insight into why Meghan never seemed to have feelings for Kate and vice versa.
Although some believe the royal sisterhood fell apart after a tearful argument over Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaid dress fitting ahead of Harry and Meghan’s wedding in May 2018, the problems between them appear to have been there long before that.
An insider told the Telegraph the Duchess of Sussex was uncomfortable with being placed behind the Prince and Princess of Wales in the palace hierarchy.
“I feel like Meghan sees herself as an independent woman, whereas Kate hasn’t really had a career yet. She seems to feel like she has more of a say than her sister-in-law, who was a relative unknown before she joined the royal family. Meghan sees herself as a philanthropist who can teach the royal family a thing or two about philanthropy. I think she finds it difficult because the Royal Foundation was already a well-oiled machine by the time she got there,” the source said.
In The Palace Papers (2022), author Tina Brown describes Meghan taking up most of the airtime during a talk at the Royal Foundation Forum.
At the height of the #MeToo movement, Meghan raised an issue that had never been raised in the foundation – empowering women. This statement surprised Harry and William and Kate seemed indifferent.
“This event is supposed to be about promoting better mental health, and the Duchess seems to be politicizing it,” Ms Brown wrote.
The source added that at the same time as the forum, Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, flew to London to have her daughter christened and prepare for the wedding. Strangely, Meghan did not introduce her to her brother-in-law and sister-in-law despite repeated requests from the Welsh family to meet.
“It’s all very strange. Meghan seems to want to create a separation between them,” the insider commented.
Even before the Royal Foundation Forum, from the moment she first came into contact with the royal family in 2016, Meghan had a certain sensitivity about Kate.
In his memoir Spare , Harry recounts that when he first introduced Meghan to his brother, Kate was still in the garden playing with the children. This was not the welcome the Sussexes had hoped for. From that point on, Meghan insisted on calling the Princess of Wales “Kate,” rather than “Catherine” like the rest of the family.
Meghan is also said to be annoyed by the perks the heir to the throne and his wife enjoy. One of them is free access to the Windsor Suite, a VIP lounge at Heathrow Airport that usually costs around £5,000 ($6,317) to enter.
Before moving into their newlywed home Frogmore Cottage in Windsor in April 2019, Harry and Meghan lived in the rather modest Nottingham Cottage. William and Kate’s apartment at Apartment 1A, Kensington Palace, was very upscale. Meghan was clearly unhappy about the difference. What she didn’t know was that her brother and sister-in-law also spent two years living in Nottingham Cottage (2011-2013) after their marriage.
Meghan was also “moved” when people praised Kate for her mothering skills, wardrobe and kindness. The Duchess has a hasty personality, likes to share everything about herself. Meanwhile, Kate is an introvert, always keeping her emotions and private things to herself.
Kate is also a royal fashion icon. Every outfit she wears becomes a topic of discussion in the media. Meghan has complained that she doesn’t get much support when it comes to clothes and is forced to wear dark tones so as not to overshadow other royals. However, she has been seen in bright colors many times.
As for William and Kate, their impression of Meghan was not good, partly influenced by mutual friends after a shooting party in Sandringham (UK). Here, Meghan seemed to clash with 16 guests over political issues, including the upcoming election that helped Donald Trump win the US presidency in January 2017.
Tom Bower revealed in Revenge (2022) that Meghan did not hesitate to challenge any guests whose views were contrary to her values. Some friends judged the beauty born in 1981 to be lacking in humor. At the end of the party, related messages about Meghan’s aggressive personality were spread among her circle of friends.
Despite Omid Scobie criticizing Kate for isolating Meghan in Endgame , many people still stand by the Princess of Wales because she always maintains a standard image and “never puts her foot wrong”.
On the contrary, Meghan and Harry are suspected of being behind Scobie’s manipulation to smear their brother and sister-in-law. Their silence in the face of this new attack on the British Royal Family only strengthens the public’s belief in this assertion.
