‘Dream guest’ Meghan Markle skips Met Gala as Anna Wintour tells her to ‘leave husband home’

Anna Wintour has claimed Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton would be her ‘dream couple’ to attend the Met Gala, but plenty of has happened between the two since Anna made the request in 2019

Meghan Markle is a no-show at this year’s Met Gala, despite the fact that host Anna Wintour has said that she would be a “dream guest.”

Back in 2019, Anna expressed that she would like the Duchess of Sussex to attend with none other than Kate Middleton. However, she didn’t have any desire for their royal husbands, Prince Harry and William, to attend – telling them to stay home.

“I would love to have the Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge [Kate’s then-title prior to becoming the Princess of Wales] together,” Wintour said during an interview with Today. “That would be my dream couple.”

“They could leave their husbands at home,” she added. “It’s the two of them I want.”

However, plenty has changed since then. Back in 2019, Meghan was still apart of the Royal Family and the tension between her and the Duchess of Wales was not as widely known.

In January 2020, Meghan and Harry announced that they’d be stepping down as senior members of the Royal Family. Once they began distancing themselves from the family, they began to speak more candidly about their experience with the palace.

They appeared for an interview with Oprah, where she revealed that two senior royal members expressed concern about their unborn son Archie’s skin colour. While she didn’t reveal their identities, the Dutch version of Omid Scobie’s book Endgame named Kate and King Charles. The book’s Dutch publisher, Xander Uitgevers, pulled those copies from shelves and told ABC News, “An error occurred in the Dutch translation and is currently being rectified.”

Meanwhile, in Harry’s book Spare, he opened up about a time where Kate made Meghan cry – even though Kate had previously claimed Meghan was the one who made her cry – over an incident involving Princess Charlotte’s flower girl dress for Meghan’s wedding.

“Kate got things rolling straightaway by acknowledging that these stories in the papers about Meg making her cry were totally false,” the Duke of Sussex he wrote in Spare. Harry alleged the Princess of Wales confessed, “I know, Meghan, that I was the one who made you cry.”
